Anthony I enjoyed your post as always and admire the lessons or character qualities you hope to build into each student. I am not sure that I have the answer to the "love" lesson but the fact that you broke the topic down into problem areas (racism, name-calling, physical and verbal abuse) shows what you wish to eliminate.

I believe that it is important to talk about the negative side of a subject such as racism in order to build character. I might do this by introducing subjects that build on thoughts that are immoral such as: 9/11, Japanese American Citizens being held captive in the U.S.A. after the World War, Native American History, Women Voting - Equality, Civil Rights - Disabilities, and Hitler - Nazi Party . Atrocities fuel discussions that change morals or thoughts by teaching tolerance. I don't want to tell Johnny he is wrong, I want to show him what is wrong in hopes that he views things differently.

I am excited to be a teacher at this time in history, in the most diverse country on the planet, because I can learn and teach so much from so many cultures instantly. My job is to promote learning and develop people and that is something few people have the chance to do. I can walk into any classroom and find a massive variety of strengths and abilities that are the building blocks of respect, confidence, and love. By embracing diversity and the ability to include what is different about something we practice inclusion and build a respectful,confident,and loving person.

I am surprised American Idol is their goal with the popularity of Glee. (I do see parents not allowing their young children to watch that particular program though :) I think showing them the PS22 Choir is a great start.

Although I am not surprised to see you want to do more than just the curriculum with your students, I am still very pleased. Keep it up!

I enjoyed your post very much. I have a son who has received labels from his teachers in the past. We know that he is unique and stay very closely involved with his teacher to be sure she knows we are paying attention to what goes on with him every day.
The saddest thing is that the students really do look up to the teacher and may grow to believe those things about themselves. Children need to believe they can do better when they make mistakes. If the adults around them don't believe it they may continue in a pattern of unproductive behavior.

I am learning so much from every teacher I meet and listen to. I began college for a new career and the further involved I get the more excited I get about working with children! I hope your positive attitude is contagious. Perhaps your example could be beneficial to the teacher you are working with as well, wouldn't that be great?

It's amazing to me how teachers label their students then act upset or shocked that they live up to those labels! I agree with Kelly that we should always be positive when labeling (if one must do so) our students. Anthony, I look forward to teaching your former students in high school someday! I'll be expecting happy, bright, divergent and independent thinkers! :)

Fantastic to see that this blog has lasted way beyond the required coursework and is now impacting your peers around the globe as you incorporate it in your professional life.

What a sad indictment on the teaching profession that a teacher would deficit model her class in this way. I have just opened up my laptop and checked out your blog after finishing reading the Sunday morning papers here in NZ. This article interviewing three brand new teachers about to face their first class on Tuesday - first day of new school year here in NZ- got me thinking. I especially enjoyed the freshness, positivity and love that shone through Jenny-Ann Howley's interview. And folded the paper hoping for the nation's children that this young woman always feels this way about them and her career. And that some embittered older teachers don't try and knock it out of her. And that I am not one of those negative teachers.

All the best in your career. Continue to love the kids and you will enjoy going to work each day.

I am sorry that your cooperating teacher was so negative. I am glad that her introduction and influence did not diminish the passion you evoked in the above post. You will have good days and you will have bad days as a teacher, that is just a part of what we do. It is how you react to those bad days that will decide your ability as a classroom teacher.

You seem to "know" that the negativity that you saw was reflected back at that teacher by her students, it will take some time for them to trust and react to the difference that you will provide. Be aware that if this person sees that you are succeeding with these students that she may feel threatened by that and proceed to make thing more difficult for you.

I wish you the best and please start using Twitter and developing a strong online PLN to help you through some of the tough times that you will have as a teacher.

Interesting that Kelly had the same reaction that I had - it's hard not to do but you must always try to NEVER paint a picture of students that might sway the way you are going to interact with them. Having taught 9th graders quite a lot, I tell the middle school teachers that I don't want to know anything about the kids (except Spec Needs type stuff) so that I don't start the year with negative feelings.

Wow! I have chill bumps reading your post. I felt so sorry for those kids that the teacher labeled in such a negative way. Why couldn't she say, "Here's Susie, she is a great reader!" or " This is Bobby he is a fantastic artist." Pointing out negative aspects of those children surely affects how she interacts and teaches those children. While there are always going to be those difficult students, I believe that as an educator, You owe it to the students to treat them with respect and show kindness in your words and actions, even when there are bumps in the road. I am filled with excitement just thinking that I will one day too be in a class room with students. I can't wait to hear more about the boy who draws checker boards.

I have seen the movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I really loved it! It had a great story to tell and kept me interested throughout. I have bought a few of the books as well and my kids love them, but I have yet to read them.
